Gillingham Anchorians III 0 Maidstone V 32
The
season started with high expiations as the team sheet showed a hefty pack and a
back line of young pace and experience.
Leading
up to kick off the backs had to shuffle after a last minute drop out and chirs
"scrapper" white standing in at scrum half.
It
was a warm afternoon and the hefty pack soon found themselves in a tough encounter
with the stones equally hefty and experienced forwards.
Stones
found some early gaps and a well worked move gave them the lead. Stones
continued to press and some good tackling from the young backs smith and
everest kept the attacking backs away from the try line. Then in
a well worked move the anchorians side decided to change kit and squeezed
in to the first team kit to see if it made them play like superstars (or
was it just a move to try and get free kit!!).
Anchs
then had a spark of life and great line out work from ashley mosdale and
mauling from dan barker gave the anchs backs a platform for an attack the
centers of smith and everest looked pacey and strong going forward and linked
well with young reevesy on the wing who featured in the move no less than 3
times. But great defence from maidstone kept them out and a try was conceded on
the counter attack.
Anchs
again battled hard to stay in the game and scrimmaged well with hard work and
effort also going in to the line out stealing a number of balls. The backs
tackled hard but maidstone grabbed a third before the break.
The
second half continued in the same vein with lots a hard work and maidstone
running in 3 trys
Verdict:
blew away a few cobwebs, great commitment, need to work on set plays
