Anchorians II 24 Vigo II 17
A tough game with tough opposition made this an exciting fixture and neither team were assured the win. For Anchorians the game was a little tougher with key positions unavailable and many members of the team having to play out of position. Dan Perry filled in at hooker for the 1st time and gave another strong performance, Adam Burmingham went into scrum half and captain Dishman took over the fly half position. All 3 players looked comfortable in their new roles and the game went well. The game started with Anchs looking strong and excellent line out work from Mike Egg Hughes kept Anchs with good quality ball. Anchorians seemed to have a lot of the ball and drove it on well but every time Vigo got their hands on the ball they kicked brilliantly and kept Anchs pinned in their own half. It was only one of those kicks that didn’t quite make the touch line that gave Anchs the first opportunity when Paul Clarke collected it cleanly and carved his way through the Vigo defence to score under the posts.
The Anchs pack looked strong throughout the game but they were at their best when they took a clean lineout and walked a rolling maul a third of the pitch towards the try line. Players such as Alan Blythe, Andrew Wylie and James Brindly had fantastic games and made a big difference to the team. James Brindley was awarded for his good work later on in the game when he picked up from the back of a scrum and powered over for a try. Brindley was also involved in another try when he picked up from the base of the scrum ran wide and popped the ball inside for Lewis Charlton to crash over the line and score. But the forwards didn’t have it all their own way as Elliot Johnstone and Seb Couchman controlled the midfield brilliantly and never let Vigo really get any control out wide. Strong runs from Elliot Johnstone and Keith White kept the Vigo defence on their toes throughout the game. The final whistle was blown and Anchs were extremely happy with the result and the work that they had put into it.
Anchorians man of the match goes to James Brindley for his hard work throughout the game.
Next week Anchs travel over to Tonbridge judds for another tough league game.
