Anchorians II 39 Weavering
I 0
Anchorians
were well prepared for this game and were looking to get back on track as far
as the league was concerned. Anchorians 1st XV have been outstanding
this season and the 2nd XV were looking to emulate their results whilst
fighting for any available squad positions.
Weavering
have always been tough opposition and Saturday’s game was no different, it took
a well practised rolling maul from the Anch’s forwards to produce the first
points. Henderson
was at the back of the maul when the opportunity presented itself and he peeled
off to make the last few yards and score the first try of the game which
doubled his own personal try tally for this season. A little later and Anch’s
were putting pressure on The Weavering defence so much so that Weavering
eventually gave away a penalty 5 yards out. Gonsalves tapped and instead of
popping the ball to one of the nearby forwards he span the ball wide to Frankie
who collected it well and he sprinted across to score 5 points. Weavering kept
putting the pressure on and twice broke through the Anchorians defence only to
be stopped by Nigel Fray at fullback.
All the way through the game The Anchorians forwards dominated and continually
gave their backs good quality ball to run back at Weavering. After one scrum
won against the head the ball came out and Pike sucked in the Weavering defence
before quick hands down the line eventually got the ball to ‘Billy the Whizz
Smith’ who sped over to score under the posts. Shortly after this a well worked
dummy run in the centres saw Captain Dishman go outside his opposite man with
only the fullback to beat, but a neat pass to Nigel Fray who was coming on at
pace finished off the move with another score under the posts. Mark Pike
converted and Anchorians were looking at a good win. John Henderson wasn’t
finished yet and as he was having one of his best games of the season picked up
the ball and charged for the line which he hit to give himself his 2nd
score of the game, again Mark Pike converted and the game was nearly over. The
last stages of the game and once again the Anch’s forwards created a great
platform and the ball went down the line to Rocky who sprinted hard past
several defenders before finally scoring in the corner. Deciding on man of the
match was difficult this week as so many players worked hard and played well. James Brindley, Dan Perry & Chris Everet all put in superb performances but
John Henderson managed the forwards brilliantly, defended like ‘Desperate Dan’
and tripled his personal annual try tally and so deserves this week’s man of
the match award.
This
was a great result for Anchorians and will help with their league battle but
next week sees Anchorians travelling to local rivals Lordswood and nobody is
under any illusion that that will be a hard battle whatever the result.
